Signed by Editor Deluxe version of the first edition, this is one of 40 copies (unnumbered) which were specially hand-bound and contain tipped-in original specimens of Daniel Berkeley Updike's work referred to in the text, and is SIGNED by the editor. Daniel Berkeley Updike (1860-1941), founder of the Merrymount Press, is viewed as one of the finest representatives of the Arts and Crafts movement in the book arts as practised in the United States; he founded the Press "to do common work uncommonly well" (N.B., above info from Wiki). This volume, published in 2002, contains many previously unpublished essays and extensive illustrations; this de luxe version also includes nine original specimens of his work tipped in at the rear, as well as a digital copy of an unpublished photograph of Updike taken in 1940. ***DESCRIPTION: Grey laid paper boards with a moss green cloth shelfback, gilt lettering on the front board, frontispiece a drawing of Updike from a study by Rudolph Ruzicka in 1930, title page in red and black, illustrations throughout the text, colophon at the end with limitation statement and editor's signature in blue ink, section in back containing the tipped-in original specimens with one contained in a pocket on the rear pastedown; octavo size (almost 9.25" tall), pagination: (i)-xxii, (1)-383, blank (384), colophon (385), blank (386), specimen section of 9 leaves. Matching publisher's slipcase covered with grey laid paper on the front, back and spine; with moss green cloth on the top and bottom. ***CONDITION: Fine, in pristine condition; crisp, clean, free of any prior owner markings, the specimens also fine; as new.
