Philadelphiae (Philadelphia); Novi Eboraci (New York): Johannis W. Moore; Joannis Wiley, 1849. First edition of the Hebrew Bible with points printed in America. Hardcover. g+. Quarto. XX, [2], 1416pp. Original 3/4 morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering and tooling on spine. All edges red. First edition of the Hebrew Bible printed in America with vocalized and cantillated text (Rosenbach). It is considered "a fine piece of printing as well as a careful edition of the text" (Matityahu Tsevat, "A Retrospective of Isaac Leeser's Biblical Work," Essays in American Jewish History [Cincinnati: American Jewish Archives, 1958], 297-99). The volume contains a preface by Leeser in Latin. The first American Bible published in Hebrew was produced in Philadelphia in 1814. It was based on the second edition of the Athias Bible but, unlike that edition, it was printed without vowel marks. It was not until 1849 that a vocalized Hebrew Bible (this copy) was published in America. Binding rubbed on spine and along edges. Prefaces in Latin, Text in Hebrew. Binding in overall fair to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. * Isaac Leeser (1806 - 1868) was an American, Ashkenazi Jewish lay minister of religion, author, translator, editor, and publisher; pioneer of the Jewish pulpit in the United States, and founder of the Jewish press of America. He produced the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English, as well as editions of the liturgy. He is considered one of the most important American Jewish personalities of 19th-century America.
