GOMBO ZHEBES: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs, SelectedFrom Six Creole Dial
New York 1885, Coleman. Blue decorated cloth, gold & silver stamping, 42p., covers spotted, else clean, solid, very good copy, 17 x 22 cm. FIRST & ONLY EDITION HEARN'S SECOND BOOK WITH HIS NAME ON TITLE PAGE: This title is Hearn's second published book with his name appearing on the title page. * A long-time resident of New Orleans, the work concerns Hearn's interest in the Creoles of Louisiana and New Orleans area and contains a host of native words and their meanings, with a useful bibliography. * CONDITION: Per Edward L. Tinker, in his historic work: LAFCADIO HEARN'S AMERICAN DAYS, on page 183, he states "Hundreds of copies lay moldering for years in a forgotten closet of a New Orleans book dealer, which explains why most of them bought there, are foxed and in bad condition." This quote was also found in the Times-Democrat, New Orleans, Sept. 2, 1886. * In our 42 years of dealing Hearn books, we have seldom found a copy that did not have spotting to the covers, and most covers are in this condition. Also see Perkins, p.7 for this citation. * Our copy show some of the usual and therefore quite 'normal' spotting to the covers, it does not however have any other evidence of being damp-stained, warped or otherwise damaged and the text is quite clean. By and large a rather nice copy in the blue cloth. * LIMITATION: Per Perkins, p.7, it seems apparent that the publisher for some strange reason, had refused to release these books in their entirety. Per the undated letter from Lafcadio Hearn in New Orleans, to Jerome A. Heart the Editor of "Argonaut" in San Francisco, Hearn states that the publisher was 'non est inventus' and forced by legal means to 'disgorge some 500 copies" of this title. It is our belief that based on this, the book was not published in an edition exceeding much over 500 copies, perhaps more of the magnitude of somewhere between 800-1000 copies at most, quite possibly less. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: P.D & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS WRITINGS: p. 6,7. * BAL 7914 * .
