The Chess Tournament
Henry G. Bohn, London 1852 - Brown leather covered boards with an embossed guilt chess board the book name on the front cover and guilt design and lettering on the spine. The edges are worn reveling the under cardboard on the top corners. Endpapers and edges are marbled. The front cover pastedown has a pasted label telling us the book was presented to The Toronto Chess Club in 1910. There are several spots on the front and back endpapers that have been stamped "Property of the Toronto Chess Club". The interior of the book is clean and unmarked. Pages have light browning around the edges. Written on the title page is "A Collection of The Games Played At This Celebrated Assemblage, Illustrated by Copious Diagrams, and Notes, Critical and Explanatory." Introductory pages lxci and text pages 377. Howard Staunton was the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in 1851, which made England the world's leading chess center.
