The Arcana of Arts and Sciences Or, Farmers' & Mechanics' Manual; Containing a Great Variety of Valuable Receipts and Useful Discoveries, in the Various Departments of Human Knowledge; Many of Which Were Never before Published.
Washington, PA: Printed By J. Grayson. Very Good. 1824. Hardcover. 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 6 3/4" x 4 1/8". Original full calf with leather spine label. 348 pages. A magical compendium of all things industrial, wholly American in its creation with detailed sections on agriculture, dyeing, bleaching, creating colors, staining wood, varnishing, metals, bronzing, lacquering, japanning, enamelling, distilling and much much more. A book whose purpose was to promote national industry, "the only sure way of increasing the wealth and securing the independence of our country." A presentable copy, especially considering the book's intended use, as most of these were "used in the shop" and rarely survived intact. This copy made more interesting by an early 19th century 1 page manuscript recipe for coloring cloth stapled to the last page. Duncan, Bibliography of Glass 9763 (p. 242-94 pertain to glass). Condition: Ex-library with the usual treatments; otherwise very good, complete as issued in a sound moderately worn binding with a chip at the head of the spine; moderately toned pages with scattered foxing.
