THE SLAYER OF SOULS ..
New York: George H. Doran Company, [1920].. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [i-vi] vii [viii-x] 13-301 [302: blank] [note: text complete despite gap in pagination; first leaf is a blank preceding half title leaf], original decorated red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. The author's best weird novel. "An American girl who has learned magic in the Mysterious East escapes and comes home but is broke and alone. In one episode she tries to earn some money by putting on a stage show in New York of genuine supernatural magic -- but the audience doesn't go for it. Later scenes that show nefarious sorcerers animating mandrakes are very nicely handled." - Robert Eldridge. "Chambers' last important work of supernatural fiction ... an adventure novel of Oriental menace whose roots are clearly in 'The Maker of Moons.'" - Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, p. 744. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 52. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-76. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 368. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 146. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 75. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-53. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 41. Reginald 02822. Light insect tracking to bottom edge of rear panel, a very good copy in a good pictorial dust jacket with considerable interior tape-mending by a former owner; the spine panel is tanned, the front panel is attractive.
