La Guirlande: Album d'art et de littérature, 2e fascicule - Novembre 1919 [WITH FIVE POCHOIR PLATES]
François Bernouard, Paris 1919 - 1/800. Quarto. Unpaginated. Original illustrated wrappers. Striking issue of "La Guirlande," a French fashion magazine published between 1919 and 1920 in competition to "Gazette du Bon Ton." However, it was not as popular and ceased to publish after only 8 issues. Profusely illustrated throughout, this copy is complete with its 6 full-page plates, including 5 printed with the color pochoir technique. "La Guirlande" employed many of the most famous Art Deco artists and illustrators of the day, including Georges Barbier*, Maurice Taquoy, Brunnelleschi and E. Blanche. One of 800 copies, of which this is copy No. 649. Spine missing and covers detached (but present). Soiling to covers. Moderate age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Wrappers in overall poor, interior in good+ to very good condition. * George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the key artists of the "Art Deco" movement and one of the most prestigious French artist’s and fashion illustrators to emerge from post World War I in the early twentieth century. He produced the most exquisite, high-color fashion plates for the couturier Paul Poiret, as well as contemporaries Lanvin, Paquin and Vionnet. His elegantly refined, graphic style was typical of the "Art Deco" school and the influences of Orientalism, antique vases, Indian miniatures, Aubrey Beardsley, the Ballet Russes (which inspired his lavish costume designs) and (not least) Parisian haute couture are evident in his work. His stylised, precisely-illustrated fashion vignettes seem to effortlessly capture and define the atmosphere of the 1920s and are so evocative of that by-gone era and a certain type of upper-class lifestyle.
