When We Were Very Young (Signed/Limited Edition)
E.P. Dutton & Co., New York 1924 - First U.S. trade edition, published as a special Limited Edition, this being number 90 of only 100 copies (of the 500 printed) that were signed by the author, with A.A. Milne's distinctive signature below the limitation statement. The first in the "series" written by Milne for his son, Christopher Robin, it is a collection of poems/nursery rhymes and not a story per se. However, it did introduce, in the 38th poem in the book, the character "Teddy Bear", which was the first book appearance of the famous character Winnie-the-Pooh (originally appearing in Punch magazine in February 1924), who was first named "Mr. Edward Bear" by Christopher Robin Milne. ***DESCRIPTION: Pictorial paper boards, green cloth spine, top edge stained green, pictorial endpapers, limitation statement and signature on the verso of the half-title page, Mr. Shepard's black and white drawings throughout; pagination: (xiv), 100. Dust jacket is unclipped (and unpriced), coloured illustrations on front and back mirror the book's, summary of book on front flap, publisher's ad for another children's book of poetry on back flap. ***CONDITION: Other than some edgewear and rubbing to the corners, and some fading to the cloth spine, the books is near fine with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The leaf comprising the title and dedication pages was roughly opened at the bottom edge with a resultant small chip to the bottom edge of the dedication page, in no wise approaching any text. The dust jacket is mostly present but is in pieces; the front and back panels, and the front and back flaps, are present but are creased and have substantial edgewear (in fact, the top edge of the panels appears to have been clipped off), the spine is missing. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
