In 1662 he was awarded the chair of Swedish antiquities at Uppsala University, and two years later he published the first edition of an Icelandic saga ('Gautreks Saga', to which was added a Swedish translation). Verelius published several other sagas but also published 'Manuductio' (1765), a handbook of Swedish runic inscriptions and also, in 1681, began to work on 'Indexlinguæ veteris scytho-scandicæ sive gothicæ', the first Old Norse dictionary compiled by a non-Icelander, which was not published until after his death, as was the present work, which was edited by Peter Schenberg.
