Album of Pressed Seaweed Specimens.
An exquisite collection of seventy-nine specimens, each identified in manuscript, the name of the place each specimen was collected. Probably British Isles, late 1800s. Each specimen is laid onto heavy paper and mounted in an album, with tissue guards separating the pages. These sorts of albums are much in vogue lately, but this is by far the most artistic and polished example I've ever seen. The sea weed needed to be floated, then laid onto paper, and minor flaws usually resulted. These examples are in perfect form; the colors have remained unusually bright. Bound in a fine full green morocco binding with gilt tooling. Front cover detached but present.
