History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth by William Robertson With an Account of the Emperor's Life after his Abdication, (1857-1859)With a frontispiece toboth volumesof History of the Reign of Philip II of Spain and an additional facsimile plate to volume I. A frontispiece to both volumes of History of the Conquest of Mexico with a folding map toboth volumesand additional plate to volume II. Frontispiece to the first volume and third volumesof Charles V. Mispagination to volume III of Charles V as 'x' is repeated twice, meaning the contents is actually xi rather than x. The reign of Philip the Second is a first edition and remained unfinished. Prescott is admired for his exhaustive, careful and systematic use of archives. Condition: In original blue cloth bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Publisher's names are gilt stamped to the bottom of spines. Externally, generally smart with slight bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spines. Minor rubbing to the gilting on spines. Both hingesof volume I of Philipare slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume I of Mexico is slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volumes and I III of Charles Vare slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's signature to the recto of volume I of Philip, 'Alexander XXX Madrid 1934'. Prior owner's signature 'Houghton' to the recto of frontispiece to volume I of Philip. Bookseller's blind stamp to the recto of front endpaper to volume II of Philip, Thomas J Beverley. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper toboth volumesof Mexico, 'Leslie Coldwell Smith,Godfrey'. Binder's stamp to rear of both volumes of Mexicoand Charles V, Edmonds and Remnants. Blind stamp to verso of front endpaper to volume III of Philip, Beverley Boston. Internally, all volume are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned with spotting to the first and last few pages and scattered spots throughout. Heavy spotting to the frontispieces of Charles V. Overall: GOOD..
