Quarto, (12) 292 (8)pp. Re-backed retaining the original boards with gilt-stamped ruling and motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense (Shame on him who thinks evil of it) on circular representation of the garter on covers*, gilt ruling and lettering on red leather label of spine; raised bans and dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece engraving of King James I. Title page with black ruling. Decorative head and endpieces and initials. Engraved garland surrounding author's autobiographical text on page opposite page one. The critical history of King James I. was published a year after Wilson's death and a suitable documentation in the time of the new constitution known as the "Instrument of Government" with Oliver Cromwell as the Lord Protector. Binding with light wear and scuffing along edges and spine. Previous owner's name inked to verso of front marbled endpaper. Irregularities in numbering from p. 153 to 161, p. 172 numbered twice but continuous. Light age toning of block. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. * "Knights and Ladies of the garter were entitle to encircle the escutcheon of their arms with the garter and motto."
