J. B. Millet Company 1897 - Boston, MA: J. B. Millet Company, 1897. Emperor's Edition, limited to 75 issued, this marked with an asterisk. Folio, 40 cm x 31.5 cm. Ten volumes bound in silk, a twin bird motif on the front boards, clouds on the rear. Bound in the Japanese style with silk tassels. Very good. The boards to this set have light wear with some fraying at the corners and spine ends. Tissue guards display creasing. A frame to one of the large format photographs in volume I has a tear, the photograph is unaffected. 60 large and 200 small hand-tinted albumen photographs with 10 collotype floral prints and 30 other works of Japanese art. Volume I contains a tinted photograph of the emperor at the front. Though uncredited, the photographs are widely thought to be by Tamamura Kosaburo. The silk bindings, tassels, and cords were woven by S. Iida using silk dyed specially for this project. The limitations page records "Imported from Japan for Mr. Zachariah Kepher Loucks." Loucks was a prominent citizen of York, Pennsylvania and owned the land which was used as a major Confederate camp site in 1863. International buyers please inquire regarding shipping.
