The First Edition of Webster's greatest and most influential dictionary, and "[t]he most ambitious publication ever undertaken, up to that time, upon American soil" [Grolier, 100 American, 36]. 2 quarto volumes, bound in contemporary mottled calf with morocco labels, and with the engraved portrait after Samuel Morse provided in facsimile. With the "Additions" leaf in Volume II, and without the November 28 Advertisement inserted quarto leaf which is almost never present. "This dictionary ... almost at once became, and has remained, the standard English Dictionary in the United States...marked a definite advance in modern lexicography, as it included many non-literary terms and paid great attention to the language actually spoken" [PMM, 291].
