A Fellow of New College, University of Oxford from c.1768 to 1842 and Honorary Fellow from 1784 to 1814.Subscribers include Sir Joseph Banks, William Pitt, R[ichard] B. Sheridan, Hans Sloane, Lord Walpole, Joshua Reynolds, etc.Robert Potter (1721–1804), translator and Church of England clergyman. Potter’s chief work was his translation of the ‘Tragedies of Æschylus’. Beattie called it ‘the best translation that ever appeared in English of any Greek poet’ and Sir James Mackintosh read it ‘with very great admiration’. Potter then translated Euripides. While not so well reviewed as his translation of Æschylus it was quickly reprinted in 1804, 1814, and 1832, with some of the plays also published seperately.
