Original maroon cloth, covers heavily embossed in blind, spines gilt titled, spines a bit spotted and sunned, occasional light foxing, overall near fine, and attractive, with contemporary ownership signatures of James Rindge Stanwood of Portsmouth, NH. Rollo in Europe--First Editions Jacob Abbott (1803-79), an American congregational minister and educator, wrote the famous Rollo series of books (Rollo at Work, Rollo at Play, etc.) to teach his young readers specific moral values and concepts. In these travel books, following the picturesque and educational experiences of Rollo and his uncle in narrative form, the young reader is taken along as though he were an accompanying guest, a lively format which helped to account for the books' immense popularity. The character of Rollo was modelled on Abbot's son Lyman, who himself became a distinguished minister and editor.
