The Virginian (Advance Salesman's Dummy)
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1902. Salesman's dummy with all Arthur Keller's illustrations present, the foreword, pages 449-496, and blank sheets. Includes a separate four page ad booklet with one ad for The Virginian, "Ready Shortly," with a long descriptive paragraph. First edition. Very Good condition. Sturdy binding, strong gilt. Cloth soiled and foxed. Fore edge soiled as well. Two holes in rear cloth, wear spot there as well. Stamped "Sample Copy" on front endpaper. Bookplate missing chip on corner of a page, toned and creased. A fascinating glimpse into the marketing of what was (then) a brand new genre-- the western.
