Les Jockeys Camoufles
1918. MATISSE, Henri. Les Jockeys Camouflés. By Pierre Reverdy. Illustrated with reproductions of 5 drawings by Matisse. 4to., bound in original printed wrappers, preserved in a recent half-morocco box. Paris: The Author, 1918.An inscribed copy of the second version of Matisse's first illustrated book. In the first version each of the poems was printed in coloured ink: green, orange, and blue, respectively. Reverdy was outraged by the final product; not only did he dislike the coloured typography, but he was annoyed that both he and the artist were referred to as "Monsieur..." on the title page - a formalism he found ridiculous. Reverdy immediately had this version prepared in black, "la seule édition approuvée par les auteurs." One of only 100 copies on Simili-Japon (there were 5 on Japon Imperial), the colophon initialed by Reverdy. The name of the recipient has been neatly excised. A rare and important book. Claude Duthuit, Henri Matisse, Ouvrages Illustres No. 41. The Artist and the Book 195 (the first version). Skira 255.
