David M Crook
London: Faber and Faber limited, 1943 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 4th Edition. [4] pp 5-104 A wartime reprint of David M Crook's autobiographical account of his role as a Spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain with a letter laid in. The note was written twelve months before Crook died in the air at the end of 1944 and is written on a sheet of paper roughly torn from an exercise book. Crook apologises for the paper at the foot of the page: 'Excuse paper - written at the aerodrome'. Dated 17 December 1943 and with the address R.A.F. Kingstown Carlisle, Crook writes to a Mr Thompson to thank him for his letter, noting that 'I've been away' and makes arrangement for what was probably a lecture to the Royal Observer Corps agreeing 'to come to Wigton on January 9 - the only difficulty being transport, as I have no car now and being Sunday I don't suppose the buses will be much use. Do any your people come out from Carlisle by car?', signing the letter in full. At this time Crook was training fighter pilots at RAF Kingstown in nearby Carlisle. He would die in 1944 while flying a Spitfire during a high level reconnaisance mission off the Scottish coast; his name appears on the Runnymede memorial. As one of the 'few' Crook recorded six kills and was one of nine 'aces' in 609 West Riding Squadron during the Battle of Britain. The book has the signature of Crook's correspondent on the first blank: 'J Thompson The 'Cottage' Kirkbride' with biographical notes about his friend below including the fact that he lecture for the Royal Observer Corps, 'at Carlisle Wigton...'
