Gideon Planish [Signed]
New York: Random House, 1943. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (quite mildly askew, a light touch of fading to the topstain), married to a Very Good dust jacket (mild edge wear and small chipping at the panel corners, presumably some expert light repair to the spine head and to a short closed tear to the front panel's top edge), SIGNED BY SINCLAIR LEWIS on the first front free endpaper; a novel centered on a social climber with a knack for public speaking who becomes involved in shady, ostensibly philanthropic, organizations in order to obtain a high social status. Sinclair Lewis won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." Of him, H.L. Mencken wrote: "[If] there was ever a novelist among us with an authentic call to the trade ... it is this red-haired tornado from the Minnesota wilds." In our experience, signed copies of the book are not at all common. An altogether Very Good to Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY SINCLAIR LEWIS.
