Hachette, Paris 1902 - first edition, large 4to.; contemporary/original calf; pps.: 9 (leaves), VII, (1), 228 (with 195 heliogravures in text), 1, (1), 1, (1), 3 (leaves), one large coloured folding-out map, 70 unnumbered fullpage heliogravure plates; binding: red leather with green polished leather panels laid in (front and back) and decoratively blind and gilt tooled with three cartouches on each side; spine polished red calf, tooled in gold and with decorated gilt tiltes in main cartouche; top edge gilt, else uncut, gilt inner dentelles at top and bottom of spine; original silk ribbon present; endpapers in central-asian, silk ikat imitating design; parchement leaves at beginning and end (with same cartouches in gold as tooled on covers), and in fact forming the original soft cover binding; light rubbing to leather edges with some light staining to polished green calf; internally paper (cream)white and perfectly clean without any trace of soiling foxing; gorgeously illustrated with 70 high quality photogravure plates on heavy vellum-paper with all silk protective leaves (bearing short captions) still present; 195 heliogravures in text; paper watermarked "H. Krafft" (in Krafft's signature)," Marais 1901", "Hachette", and "au Turkestan Russe"; bookplate Charles Mewes on verso of first flyleaf; PRINTED PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION to verso of half-title: "Exemplaire reserve a Monsieur Charles Mewes" , continued and handwritten in ink by Krafft: "en amical hommage de, Hughues Krafft"; this is one of the very few copies de luxe which Krafft had reserved for his personal use and determined as presentation copies; all of them seem to have the same luxory binding and bear a personalized printed inscription by Krafft, and have the original, gilt decorated vellum "wraps" bound in; 100% complete, rare thus; please inquire before ordering
