A collection of six of the total fifteen discourses published, namely the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th, 15th discourses, of which four are presentation copies, inscribed by reynolds. As the first President of the Royal Academy, Reynolds was responsible for raising the status of artists and the prestige of art in England. His discourses are considered the classical expression of the academic doctrine of the "Grand Manner". The Discourses are the embodiment of the Neo-classical tradition and an attempt to counter the advent of Romanticism.CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION: A discourse, delivered at the opening of the Royal Academy, January 2, 1769, by the president.
