Leipzig & Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1895 - Octavo. Original buff wrappers printed in black, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Skillfully rebacked in matching paper, fragment of original spine with lettering retained. Very good. First edition, rare. COPAC lists copies at only four institutional libraries in Britain and Ireland: British Library, Cambridge, Warburg Institute and Wellcome Library. "A collaborative project by Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud, Studies on Hysteria (.) is widely regarded as the founding document of psychoanalysis. Encompassing both technique and theory, the Studies contains "The Preliminary Communication," written jointly by Breuer and Freud, the case of "Anna O." by Breuer, four case histories by Freud, a section on theory by Breuer, and another on psycotherapy by Freud" (Rothman, Marcus & Kiceluk (eds.), Medicine and Western Civilisation, Rutgers 2003, p. 178).
