Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1971 - First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with nominal wear. Novel set in Ohio in 1818. Long Inscription by Maxwell (signed "W.M.") to an important editor, discussing how he arrived at the tone of the book, in part: "When I was young I realized that the first-person narrative is the hardest of all to manage, and that I wasn't up to it. With this book it suddenly became natural to me -- I kept thinking of E.B. White as I wrote it. His relaxed backhand." A nice inscription. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
