A collection of twelve almanacs for 1764 including: ANDREWS, William Remarkable News from the Stars; or, an Ephemeris for 1764. ANONYMOUS. The Gentleman's Diary, or the Mathematical Repository. ANONYMOUS. The Ladies' Diary: or Woman's Almanack. MOORE, Francis. Vox Stellarum: or, a loyal almanack for the year of human redemption. PARTRIDGE, John. Merlinus Liberatus. Being an almanack for the year of our redemption. [PARKER]. Parker's Ephemeris. PEARSE, Salem. The Coelestial Diary: or, an ephemeris. POOR ROBIN. Poor Robin, 1764. An Almanack after the old, but conformable to the new, fashionsâ€Â¦ SAUNDERS, Richard. The English Apollo: Or, useful companion. SEASON, Henry. Speculum Anii; or, Season on the seasons. WING, Tycho. An Almanack. WHITE, Robert. The Coelestial Atlas. These almanacs offer a variety of different approaches to the year 1764, which was, as each author notes carefully, was a leap year. Some writers, such as Andrews, Moore and Wing, take a highly astrological view of the coming year, with predictions and prognostications, while others, especially the anonymous authors of the gentleman's and ladies' Diaries, are more concerned with solid facts, dates and mathematics. Still others offer an ideological view, for instance Partridge, whose almanac records the "72nd (year) of our deliverance by K. William from popery and arbitrary government" and includes The Protestant Remembrancer. The astronomical and tide observations in each of these almanacs are interesting, especially in the recording of, for instance, eclipses by White and Moore. 1764 was in fact a fairly quiet year, but this is a very unusual collection of fascinating works that give an insight into the preoccupations and interests of eighteenth century Britain.
