Early Experiences of Life in South Australia and an Extended Colonial History
E, S, Wigg & Son, Adelaide 1884 - Octavo, plates and maps; fine, bright and unopened in publisher's decorated cloth. Overlooked publication on the exploration of Northern Australia. Second and best edition, including several exploration journals not in the first and not elsewhere available.Bull arrived in Adelaide in May 1838 as a settler, started a land and stock agency, and finally turned to farming during the depression of the early 1840s. His reminiscences first appeared as articles in the South Australian "Chronicle" and were revised for this edition which was "so much enlarged as to be a new work." His account of the first, unsettled years of the colony is notable for its detailed and often critical accounts of individuals.Bull added substantially to this London edition, increasing it two-fold. Most of the new matter relates to the later history of the colony and to the Northern Territory. Bull prints many first-hand accounts of private and official travels and surveying expeditions which are otherwise unavailable. Of particular interest is the account of McKinlay's 1864 expedition to the East Alligator River in the Northern Territory. The account of this nearly fatal expedition is by R. H. Edmunds, surveyor and second-in-command. Despite its importance in the history of Northern Territory exploration, it appears only to have been printed in this book. Two of the four plates relate to the McKinlay expedition: 'Framework of Punt in which McKinlay and Party returned from their exploring trip' and 'Arrival of McKinlay and Party at Escape Cliff, Northern Territory'.From the library of Dr. Robert Edwards, AO.
