A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA **** 2nd-3rd printing of 1st hbk edition in FINE+ / Fine DJ ****
Berkeley, CA: Parnassus Press, 2nd or 3rd printing of 1st edition. 1968 - 8vo. FINE+ first book of Le Guin's EARTHSEA TRILOGY, and her first book written exclusively for children. NOT an ex-library, ex-libris, nor a remainder, nor a Print-on-Demand. Due to information on the top right inside DJ's first fold saying only "11 up" (no mention of original $3.95 price), and because its front boards are not embossed, copy is either a 2nd or 3rd printing of 1st edition, according to Currey. Its textured-looking turquoise paper-covered boards (with sea-green endpages front and back) are near-pristine; no scuffing or indentations; barely detectable abrasion at 3 of 4 corners, still leaving them quite sharp. Each chapter starts out with a small black woodcut drawing by Ruth Robbins. The same drawing on the front of DJ is reproduced on the front boards, framed in black under the title -- Robbins' woodcut of a young person facing "out to sea." This copy appears unread -- its binding is so tight it resists opening, and thus is almost flawless--: no prior owner names or labels, nor in/external markings or soiling. Its FINE+ mylar-protected dust jacket shows no creasing chips or tears, just the slightest touch of sunning at its spine and edges of both flaps. Corner front fold saying "11 and up" is unclipped, so DJ is intact. Overall, copy and DJ are remarkably spotless, in near GIFT condition. The inevitable faint scattering of foxing at top edge only (due to the aging of untreated paper used 40-50 years ago) is copy's only other "flaw," with the negligible sunning at spine, fold edges. Copyright page Library of Congress line gives the number as "68-21992." According to Cawthorn and Moorcock -- of the Top 100 Best Books (Fantasy genre), A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA ranks #85. Copy in this excellent condition is quite scarce, all the more because title is no longer in print in hardcover.
