Ashenden. Or the British Agent.
London, William Heinemann, 1928. Secret Service thriller. Second Impression. Publisher's cloth, gilt titles. Slight bubbling of cloth to front and rear panel and a trifle of wear to the head and tail of spine. Else a near fine copy. This copy inscribed by Maugham twice; once to the front endpaper "For Jack From WM", and again upside down on the rear endpaper. A pretty copy that shows well.A Haycroft-Queen cornerstone book. Two of the stories in 'Ashenden' were used by Alfred Hitchcock as the basis for 'The Secret Agent'. 'It is the archetype of the espionage novel, a precursor to the works of Ian Fleming, Len Deighton, John leCarre and Robert Ludlum.' (Book Collector 272). Book Collector; Top 200 Crime Novels (No.272). Also Stott, Rothschild, Haining; Crime Fiction p198.
