Framed original "Betty Boop" drawing
1939. unbound. Rare original animation production drawing from the 1939 Betty Boop short "Musical Mountaineers" -- a seven-minute short in which Betty Boop runs out of gas while driving through hillbilly country. When she approaches a nearby shack to ask for help, the locals are suspicious of the stranger, but Betty wins them over with her dancing. This full graphite drawing measures 6.5 x 8.5 inches and has a border outlined in red pastel pencil. It is attractively double-matted in gray and red and is set in a gold metallic frame measuring 10.5 x 12.75 inches. The drawing, which depicts Betty Boop as she approaches the hillbilly family shack, was executed by Thomas Johnson and differs only slightly from the complete animated production in that Betty is no longer wearing her scarf. The original title of this cartoon was supposed to be Betty Boop in "Hillbillies," and this is evident from a sequence of rare Fleischer storyboards that are currently online. In 1939 the Fleischer brothers stopped releasing Betty Boop cartoons, partly because of the ever-increasing problems of clearing censorship. Provenance: from the artist to his nephew and from the nephew to a family friend. Fine condition. Newspaper cartoonist and animator best remembered for his work with Max and Dave Fleischer at Fleischer Studios in the 1930s, especially in the creation of the "Betty Boop" and "Popeye" shorts.
