Banners and Standards of the Russian Army].
Paris -1964 1963 - Two text volumes, folio (33.5 x 25.5 cm). Offset printing from the original typescript, limited to 100 copies. 32, 30 pp.; 89, 56 pp., text in Russian and French, limitation stamp on first page of vol. 1. Original printed wrappers. Complete set of 123 plates, including 8 coloured in contemporary hand, not bound as issued, kept in two contemporary card folders. All kept in amateur cloth slip-case. Fine complete example of this rare émigré publication limited to only 100 copies. It presents an important and extensive research into the banners and standards of the Russian army regiments from the time of Ivan the Terrible until 1900, providing detailed description of colours and symbols used and the exact dates of any changes made. Vladimir Zvegintsev (1914, Tsarskoe Selo - 1996, Paris) - a Russian military historian and an expert on Russian army uniforms, who in his profession followed an example of his father, a military writer. Many of the Zvegintsev's works were never published in the full sense of the word, but rather typed on the typewriter, corrected by hand where necessary and multiplied using offset printing. The present work is no exception. In its fragile printed wrappers and with plates unbound not many copies of this small edition survive complete and in good condition. No copies in RGB; WorldCat finds only three copies outside Russia: in Sorbonne University library, Toronto Public Library and German National library. Republished in 2008. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
