London: Chapman & Hall 1869 - First edition, 24 x 18.5cm (4to), in publisher's ivory rib-grain cloth w/gilt decorations & title (designed by Sandys) to fr. cover, bevelled edges, a.e. red, pale blue ep.s, [i-v] vi-x, [1] 2-67 [68] pp., + tissue-guard facing half-title, & sepia albumin print of "Medea" by Sandys pasted to frontis. Printed by Joseph Causton & Sons, London. With bookseller's ticket of H. Cleaver, Bath to fr. pastedown. One of the rarest of all Pre-Raphaelite publications; only eight other copies are known. "Shortly after the appearance of 'Medea' at the Royal Academy in 1869, a slim volume was published, elegantly printed & bound, containing 'Medea: a Poem' by Alfred Bate Richards, w/a photograph of Sandys's picture as frontispiece. The gilt-stamped binding was clearly a Sandys design also" (Betty Elzea, "Frederick Sandys" [Woodbridge UK: ACC Ltd., 2001], p.185). Binding Very Good (cloth moderately soiled, & extremities sl. bumped); contents Very Good (remnants of tape repair to gutter between half-title & frontis, & lt. foxing to 1st & final few leaves).
