Four Photographs of Aiken, South Carolina
J.A. Palmer, Aiken, South Carolina 1885 - Four cabinet photographs. Each measures 7" x 4.5" and is mounted on a slightly larger card, all depict Aiken scenes and all but one are of African-American subjects. Each card has Parker's Aiken, South Carolina label on the rear. Corners of the cards slightly rounded else near fine (except where noted). The subjects are: No. 868: Carts (an African-American boy driving an ox-cart); No. 818: Colored Cemetery (forlorn looking headstones); No. 616: Cabins (two women and ten children posed in front of a shack with a large cook pot in the foreground); and No. 414: Highland Park Hotel (large and majestic hotel; no humans evident; very faint stain on the left of the image). Palmer is well-known for his photographs of Aiken and Atlanta, especially his sterographs; these larger single images seem much less common.
