INFLUENCE OF SEA POWER UPON HISTORY 1660-1783
London Sampson Low, Marston & Co [1890] - First Edition, the U.K issuance using the American sheets. Illustrated with 24 battle plans and 4 maps (one folding). Tall 8vo, in a handsome contemporary binding by Sizer of three-quarter blue morocco over blue cloth, the back-and-corner pieces trimmed with a gilt-rolled device, the spine with handsomely gilt tooled bands with further gilt ruling and stippling, each compartment with a central gilt tool but for two, which are each lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. xxiv, 557pp., including index. A handsome copy, the textblock solid and sturdy, the hinges firm and the contemporary binding handsome with just a bit of age. HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Mahan's classic work and one of the most important books ever written on the influence of naval power in the determining of political, economic and military authority. This treatise had a lasting influence upon American military thought, helping to convince our leaders that a strong navy was a necessity (as it subsequently proved to be, in two world wars). ‘One of the books that changed the world’.
