Ampana, Fig. 10
Amsterdam 1693 - Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Draakenstein was a Dutch traveler, the one time Governor of Cochin and a naturalist whom worked for the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century. In 1693 he published his work, “Hortus Indicus Malabaricus,” in twelve volumes. This publication is the oldest comprehensive book printed on the natural plant wealth of Asia and of the tropics, specifically the south Indian Malabar region. Van Rheede’s “Hortus Indicus Malabaricus” is the result of 30 years of compiling and editing information from a team of the best of 17th century European physicians, scientist, technicians, illustrators and engravers, whom collaborated with scholars from all over India. It is of great importance today as a rare record of the plant wealth of Kerala (India) and medicinal uses of those plants, and is the only source of information about ancient Indian medicinal plants. Comprising 1,595 pages of text, all in Latin, the original book contains descriptions and illustrations of 742 plants. Included in the plant descriptions are the medicinal properties of the plants, the respective diseases for which they were used for treatment and the modes of treatment as known to the ancient, renowned traditional physicians of Malabar (Kerala). This fine hand-colored engraving titled "Ampana, Fig. 10" from “Hortus Indicus Malabaricus,” measures 15.25” x 18.75” and is in excellent condition with a slightly cropped right margin, evidence of previous repair to the central crease and light color runoff from being bound. As illustrated on this plate, the plant is described by its names in the regional language of Malayalam, which was the language used by the natives of Cohin during the 17th century. These trees, similar to palm trees, are expertly hand-colored and detailed in rich shades of green and brown. Illustrated on this dynamic engraving are details of the branches of the tree, the flowering stalks and bark. Precise lines define and detail expertly and add naturalistic qualities to the engraving.
