1943 - KNIGHT, Eric. LASSIE COME HOME. Chicago: John C. Winston Company, [1943]. 8vo., pictorial orange cloth, with a picture of Lassie on the front cover. First Edition, ninth printing. Believe it or not, apparently signed by Lassie! On the color portrait frontispiece of Lassie is an original ink paw print followed by an inscription in ink: "Lassie's signature. 11-17-43, Witness, W. Tyson." The film version of this book, starring Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor, was released in December, 1943. Lassie is actually a rough collie named "Pal"- so this would be Pal's footprint. I have tried to research W. Tyson but with little success. There is an ink presentation: "To Jerry, from Aunt Wilma" on a front blank page. Books signed by Knight are scarce because he was killed in World War II- just a few years after this book was published and books "signed" by Lassie are probably equally scarce. Knight was killed in 1943 when his plane was shot down in the Caribbean, reportedly by a German U-boat that mistook his plane for one that was taking President Roosevelt to Casablanca. There is obviously no way to verify Lassie's [Pal's] paw print but I have little doubt that it is not authentic. Very Good (little wear & soil covers; a tiny bit of ink from the paw signature has transfered to the title page). $750.00. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
