There is a short tear in the cloth at the head of the spine (about 5/16 inch). Spine slightly darkened. Top edge gilt, and showing tarnish. Inscribed and signed on half-title page "To W. Pett Ridge with warmest regards from H. G. Wells". Monograph bookplate of Pett Ridge on first blank page. No marks in book. Lacking DJ. Now in clamshell case with red cloth cover and gilt lettering on back side. Case is near fine condition. Ref: G.Wells No. 19, Wells Society No. 20. In this series of nine essays, first published in serial form in The Fortnightly Review (Apr.-Dec. 1901), Wells speculates on technology and society 100 years hence. He covered subjects from transportation, war, language, population, democracy, and eugenics. This volume was presented to his close friend and author, William Pett-Ridge (1859-1930). Pett-Ridge had success as a novelist in the early part of the 20th century. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 318 pages .
