Inauguration of THE STATUE OF LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD, By the President of the United States on Bedlow's Island, New York, Thursday, October 28, 1886
C. Appleton & Co., New York 1887 - Frontispiece is a bound-in Tiffany-engraved invitation to the inauguration ceremony, with a tissue protector. Includes the proceedings in Paris, a list of delegation members, ceremonies, prayers and speeches. Concludes with John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "The Bartholdi Statue" and the text of the inscription in the statue's eastern doorway. It looks as if the original owner was a bit careless with the book, but later users were careful with this little treasure. When the pages were initially cut (yes, it's that sort of 19th century publication) it might have been a bit careless, as one page has a notably uneven cut and another has a small tab that belongs to its neighbor. These imperfections are marginal, and add more character to the book. Original blue cloth has brilliant gilt on front. Covers are in decent shape with 125 years of light scuffing, dirt and edgewear. One corner is bumped as if dropped; all corners have a little exposed board. Plain spine is sunned with crushed and frayed ends. Shoulder has a little rubbing. Cloth has some minor bubbles. Pastedowns are a patterned and textured green and white paper. Front pastedown is cracked <1" at foot of hinge. Text block has bright gilt along top edge. Pages free of writing and gently aged, with occasional scattered foxing mostly in the margins. 63 pages. 6.75 x 9.25 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer [Attributes: Hard Cover]
