Published By Author, Yedo - Tokyo 1866 - Red leather spine and corners with the title in gilt on a black gilt edged panel,with a decorative device benath in gilt and with "Yedo" and the date 1866 also gilt at the foot of the spine, with matching red cloth boards. 998 pages.21 X 16.5 cms. The title page is in English and Japanese the preface to the first edition of November1862 is printed above the preface to this second evised edition dated January 1866. Then there is a one page explanation of abreviations used in the dictionary. These first pages are unpaginated The dictionary then begins at page 1, entries are in alphabetical order with the English word on the left and the Japanese explanation on the right. the pages are divided into double columns. At the end of the dictionary proper is a table of irregular verbs, an explanation of abbreviations in alphabetical order, and "arbitrary signs" : explanation of signs and symbols such as Roman numerals ; colon, comma, cedilla etc. This edition was printed from metal plates on Japanese egg paper. The book is in a later three quarter leather binding. Very good attractive binding all clean and unworn, the pages are a little browned with age, as expected. Iternally the book is all complete and in good order throughout. There is a previous owner's ex-libris book plate on the front paste down ,and a small name stamp from the same owner on the top edge of the pages by the head of the spine which is quite unobtrusive.
