MOBY DICK or THE WHITE WHALE **** Rare circa 1901 edition in VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE condition ****
Boston: Dana Estes & Co. Copyright 1892, by Elizabeth S. Melville. Published circa 1901. 1 of 619 copies by this publisher sold btw. 1901 - 1906. - 8vo (8 x 5 3/4 in.). RARE circa 1901 edition; CP shows 1892. Not an ex-libris; not an ex-library. No prior owner names labels inscriptions bookplates, or markings of any kind. And no dust jacket. VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE- in dark blue cloth boards w/gilt lettering (bright & sharp) and multi-colored designs on front cover & spine (a scallop-shell design on spine; a sailboat with full moon in sky on front cover); all lettering at front cover and spine are very legible ~ nothing has faded. All parts of book and its boards are present, though its extremities are mildly rubbed, corners lightly bumped. B&W frontis. Pages lightly age-toned without foxing, very clean, lightly grazed corners, text block square, with hinge at frontis starting. Copy's most egregious flaw: between frontis and full-page about half of it has pulled away from binding revealing netting, though the binding is still holding. Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel MOBY DICK (first published in 1851), the great American classic of the 19th century. In the early 20th century, Moby Dick was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. This very early edition is quite rare; only 1000 copies were printed by this publisher between 1901 and 1906; 619 copies were sold. It has been handled gently and is well-preserved for its age. A superior and collectible copy of a treasured book. We will ship Domestic Book Rate to you, and will include Insurance and Delivery Confirmation free-of-charge.
