Cohn's first paper in 1872 laid out a system of classification of bacteria, distinguishing four groups based on constancy of external form linked with certain physiological phenomena. His second paper of 1875 announced the discovery of heat-resistant spores produced by certain bacteria. Both are very rare. G-M cites a third paper published in 1876; however, the first two papers contain the original contributions, upon which the third only elaborates. Cohn's classification provided a firm foundation for bacteriology as a science. He was founder of the Beitrage in which his papers appeared, and in which Koch's exposition of techniques in bacteriology was given in 1877 (see G-M 2488).
