American Society in the Days of Washington.
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1855 - 2 volumes, quarto (270 × 185 mm). Finely bound by Bayntun in near-contemporary blue crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt with raised bands and gilt compartments, gilt borders incorporating American flag, Cosway-style doublures with oval miniatures of George and Martha Washington under glass, buff silk endpapers, turn-ins and all edges gilt. Housed in blue slipcases. Spines slightly faded, internally fine; an excellent set in a deluxe binding. 25 colour and 67 monochrome plates, all with tissue guards. A deluxe issue of this profusely illustrated history of America's founding years. First published the preceding year entitled The Republican court, or, American Society in the days of Washington, it features chapters on the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Washington's inauguration, and high society in Philadelphia and New York. It is extravagantly bound and extra-illustrated with portraits and views, including 21 engraved portraits after paintings by Gilbert Stuart, Copley and Gainsborough that feature Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison and other leading women of the time. At Griswold's death in 1857, The New York Times wrote: "The latest complete work from the pen of Dr. Griswold was his Republican Court. This was intended as a holiday gift-book, and was issued by a New-York house in 1854, in splendid style Griswold has compressed a graphic view of the customs, opinions, lives, fashions, whims, of the ladies and gentlemen who formed that brilliant circle of which the First President was the centre."
