The Works of Shakespear in six volumes. Carefully revised and corrected by the former editions, and adorned with sculptures designed and executed by the best hands.
Oxford The Theatre 1744 - First Hanmer edition. 6 volumes, 4to., engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved vignette to title, 37 engraved plates by H. Gravelot after F. Hayman, 24 engraved vignettes, light spotting to plates, more so to "Anthony & Cleopatra", light offsetting from plates to text, contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt fillet border, neat repairs to extremities, morocco lettering labels and numbering pieces renewed, a very attractive set. "The fourth of the eighteenth-century editions of Shakespeare's works, Sir Thomas Hanmer's 1744 edition in six volumes, is remembered today not for its editorial choices, but for its Shakespearean illustrations, some of the most effective and original to that date. For each play, Hanmer commissioned a drawing by the artist Francis Hayman that was then engraved by Hubert Gravelot. Although Hayman did not base his drawings on actual stage productions, he set them in a theatrical space." (Folger Shakespeare Library website). Sir Thomas Hanmer, fourth baronet (1677–1746), speaker of the House of Commons, turned to the literary life after his retirement from politics in the late 1720's. Jaggard p499.
