Le Fortificationi. Nuovamente Ristampate, Corrette & Ampliate di tutto quello che mancava per la lor compita perfettione, con l'aggiunta del sesto libro
Francesco Rampazetto, Venice 1609 - Lorini's opus on fortifications with the additional sixth volume, absent from the 1596 first edition. Bound in full early acid calf. Wear and a number of surface scratches to leather binding, some large and through to boards. One or two miniscule wormholes to spine, 6 raised bands to spine, gilt rubbed but attractive. Title page with typo for date (MDCCIX). Book 6 with a separate title page.[12]-303 (but actually 299)-[1]. Paper repair to 30-31at inner margin; pp. 57, 149, 185 and 297 misnumbered; light marginal dampstaining to numerous pages, including title and portrait (heavier to portrait); institutional stamp to title page. Numerous illustrations, both in text and full page (and two page). Lorini practiced as a military engineer in France, Flanders and Venice before the publication of Fortificationi, which was hugely successful. He offers designs for 5, 7 and 9 sided fortresses, discusses the practical aspects of their construction (layout, cost), gives a history of ancient defenses, the equipment and tools used in construction (including a very early illustration of a diving bell, a square box with a glass window for viewing) and then examines the real world case of the defenses of the Grand Duke of Tuscany (in the added Sixth book). Graesse 261, Avery 605. Size: Folio. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Architecture; Inventory No: 036977. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
