Henry Timrod -- Original Ink Wash Painting by Malcolm Fraser (from Collection of Clifton Waller Barrett with Original Montage, UVA Interest) (Civil War Interest)
Malcolm Fraser - (Art, Civil War) Original ink wash painting of Henry Timrod by Malcolm Fraser from collection of Clifton Waller Barrett with original montage made from bookplates and photos of Clifton Waller Barrett as well as handwritten history and family notated extras. Ink wash painting measures 8.25 x 5.75 inches. The painting was originally framed with the montage acting as the backing. Very Good condition. Before the start of the Civil War, Henry Timrod?s literary reputation as a poet was modest. The political activities surrounding the formation of a new nation and the impact of the war itself aroused Timrod's poetic imagination, and he quickly became widely known as the literary spokesman and eventually as the so-called poet laureate of the Confederacy, an unofficial title he has retained ever since. This piece is from the personal collection of noted collector and UVA benefactor Clifton Waller Barrett. Noted on the montage: ?Like Henry Timrod (1828-1867??Poet Laureate of the Confederacy?)?Clifton Waller Barrett (died Nov., 1991 in his 90th year) was a poet laureate of the South! . . .?
