London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. Covers bordered in French fillets and corner rosettes. Spine in six panels with leather titless and gilt floral panel designs. Date at foot. All edges gilt. Grey endpapers. Pleasing engraved book-plate on front pastedown with slight off-setting onto adjacent free endpaper. Bound with half-title. Portrait frontispiece of the author. Thirty-nine full page engraved plates by "Phiz". The first four plates have the Chapman and Hall imprint at the bottom. Many plates are darkened around periphery (see photo) but many show little or no toning of the paper. This is an early mixed state of the first edition with "visitor" for "sister" on page 123, line 17. Corrected "letter" on page 160, 6 lines up. A lovely binding SIGNED BY MORRELL BINDERS, LONDON".
