Gales & Seaton, Washington, D.C. 1826 - (Government & Law, Americana) BARBOUR, James, Thomas L. McKenney, William P. Duval, et al. Letter from the Secretary of War, Transmitting the information required of the House of Representatives, of the 16th of May last, in relation to the Florida Indians [19th Congress, 2nd Session, Doc. No. 17]. Washington, D.C.: Gales & Seaton, 1826. First Edition. Paper wrappers, 39 pages [disbound]. Removed from larger volume. Foxing and edge wear. Very Good condition overall. A series of communication initiated after a party of Indians who were hunting in an area contrary to a previous treaty ?fell in with an innocent and unoffending man in this county, shot and scalped him.? Contents include correspondences between James Barbour [Secretary of War], Thomas L. McKenney [General Superintendent of Indian Affairs], William P. Duval [Governor of Florida], and others. At one point, it is stated that the ?Indians must be protected, on the one hand, from the press of white people, of which you speak, and the white people from the depredation of Indians, on the other.? Another section even addresses rules with the Native American regarding slaves: ?No buying or selling of slaves will be permitted by the agent, or the agency. If the Indians own slaves, they are their property; if they secrete runaway slave, they must give them up to their rightful owners.? [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
