Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Viduam & Filios Joannis Moreti, 1614, and 1605, 1605. First work, "De Militia Romana": Pp. 397, [7] index. With 13 full-, half-, and quarter-page copper engravings (1 folding), Plantin's woodcut device, initials and several woodcut textual illustrations. Second work, "Poliorceticon": Pp. 219, [7] index. 36 full- and half-page engravings, woodcut printer's devices on title and last leaf, woodcut initials and ornaments. Bound in contemporary vellum, rebacked with original ink-lettered spine laid down, large blind-stamped arabesque centrepiece on covers. Brownish stain on rear cover, leaves lightly toned, noticeable offsetting from some plates, but overall a nice clean copy. An early combined edition of the Flemish humanist and Latin scholar, Justus Lipsius's two most important treatises on Roman military history. "De Militia Romana", first published in 1595, is a commentary on Polybius's "History", with the Greek text and a parallel Latin translation. "Poliorcetica" (1599) is a study of the Roman machinery of war. Both are embellished with the fine engravings of Peeter vander Borcht and Theodore Galle. In addition to these works, Lipsius produced critical editions of Vallerius Maximus, Vellius Paterculus, Seneca, and the younger Pliny, but he was most highly regarded for his editions of Tacitus (1574, 1600), whose work he knew so well that he "offered to repeat any passage with a dagger at his breast, to be used against him if his memory failed him". (Sandys II, 303).. Vellum. Very Good. Quarto.
