Thomas Parkhurst at the Golden Bible on London-bridge 1667 - pp. [26], 88, 4, 93-128, [4], 220, [4], 144 + Folding frontispiece. Attractively rebacked original Seventeenth Century calf boards. Housed in custom made oatmeal clamshell box with black calf spine label. Wear to original boards. Very ornate gilt work between raised bands on replacement spine. Internally complete and in very good condition with old professional paper repair to leading edge margin of the woodcut frontispiece. An important title written and published in the year after the Great Fire. Remarkable woodcut frontispiece obviously depicted from an eyewitness view from the South Bank with the Globe in view and more obviously St. Pauls on the North Bank. Samuel Rolle was a Hospitaller at St. Thomas's Hospital in Southwark; he was ordained in 1677. Rolle used the fire like many to preach that the Fire was a judgement of God for the sins of Londoners. However, much of the text is eyewitness material about the fire and its devastating results. There was the plight of the homeless, the extent of the damage, the horror and disbelief and the loathing of those Landlords, Carters, Boaters etc who profited directly from the fire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
