This haggadah was first published in an edition of 250 numbered vellum copies in 1939 (125 copies were offered for sale in England and another 125 copies - in America). The current edition is a paper replica of the 1st, 1939 edition. Arthur Szyk, a Polish Jewish artist and one of the most remarkable modern manuscript illuminators, collaborated with the British Jewish historian Cecil Roth in the creation of this masterpiece Haggadah during the 1930s. Only 250 of this book were published, the production commenced before the war and the first copies were avalible in 1939. The oofered copy is no. 54 out of 125 that were offered for sale in the United States, another 125 wereoffered for sale in England. The book is an eloquent testimony to the parallell between the persecution of the Jews in Egypt at the time of the Passover, and the persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany. In his illustrations Szyk retold the ancient Passover narrative as if it was an event unfolding in 1930s Europe. He portrayed the ancient Hebrews as Eastern European Jews and the Egyptians as modern-day Nazis (which he ultimately had to change to the less controvercial Roman looking characters, as no publisher in Europe of that time was willing to print a book with Nazi symbols).
