An illustrated Japanese manuscript, dated to ca. 1825 from style and content, showing decorative furnishings for gardens, principally lantern styles with customizing options for platforms, fireboxes, etc. ****** The 108 captioned designs were done by an unattributed artist on handmade hoshi shi paper, lightly sprinkled with mica, possibly as a catalog for a Kyoto or Nagoya shop: 52 pages are done in sumi-e and 23 pages of special designs are also brushed with gray. The manuscript is in the original display binding, the upper side of the wrappers decorated with a hand painted gorinto design in five colors, showing a weathered pair on a pedestal, bordered by grasses, sheets sewn in the yamatotoji style with red silk ribbon. ******
- SIZE: Pages (with no borders): 266 x 178 mm (10.47 x 7.01 inches) / Wrappers: 266 x 190 mm. HOSHI SHI: a thin, high grade kozo paper. LEAVES: 38 leaves, folded in the oriental style. CONTENTS: Lantern Designs: Forty five, many with decorative element details. There are forty three standing stone lanterns (ishidoro), principally a great variety of tachi-doro (31), but also ikekomi-doro (7), and oki-doro (5) and two hanging bronze lanterns (tsuridoro), done in the autumn style, the pedestal feet fashioned after deer hooves, the open work displaying a leaping stag and maple leaf fretwork. / Separate Lantern Element Designs: Forty seven, principally platforms and fireboxes, each on its own page. / Stupa Designs: Two, one gorinto and one hokyointo. / Water Basins and Pottery: Ten tsukubai (water basin) designs and several pottery examples, some plain and intended for a roji garden, or for a tea ceremony, and three with decorative sculpture integrated into the design, including an octopus with a human face, several arms coiled around the pot lip & neck, and another, with a baby turtle tipped on its back, after attempting to climb out of the bowl. CONDITION: Near Good. Pages: slight cockling, many with slight bottom tip creases, a few with fold lines, a few with small, clean vertical bottom edge tears, one sheet with its folded bottom edge neatly slit; one owner seal at rear; some worming throughout. / Worm Trails (principally small): Trail 1, at bottom corner, sharply diminishes after Sheet 7; Trail 2, center of gutter, continues through manuscript; Trail 3, also, center of gutter, begins rear of lower wrapper side and continues through first three rear sheets only, vanishing thereafter. / Wrappers: soiled, edge wear, inner lining partially detached at edges. / Binding: Very Good, ribbons with some edge wear.
